About us
Deakin University’s careers service
DeakinTALENT is dedicated to guiding students and graduates through every step of their career journey. From enrolment to graduation and beyond, we offer personalised support and resources to help them achieve their career goals.
We recognise that no two students are the same and that career development is a personal journey. That’s why we offer a range of programs and services that support students to:
- think about career pathways and goals
- discover a broad range of roles, employers and industries
- plan career development activities
- act on career goals and apply for opportunities
- extend networks and experiences
We empower students to explore a broad range of career opportunities, build skills and experience and apply their career plan to shape a career that aligns with their interests, values and skills.
We enable employers to recruit Deakin graduates by building their employer brand, promoting job vacancies and offering a free recruitment agency service.
Our leadership
DeakinTALENT is led by Professor Jamie Mustard, Pro-Vice Chancellor – Graduate Employment. Jamie provides strategic oversight for work-integrated learning across the university and oversees a program embedding employability initiatives within curricula. He is particularly interested in employability interventions for international students, from pre-departure to graduation. Previously, Jamie has held several key leadership positions at the University, including Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Business and Law.
Our programs and services
At Deakin, students are encouraged to leverage their current paid work, such as a casual retail role, into more career-relevant roles as they progress through their studies. We call these Stepping Stone roles. So rather than earn while they learn, Deakin students learn while they earn.
Students have access to a variety of resources and tools on our website and dedicated myDeakinTALENT portal. These resources include a platform for job listings and internships, services for reviewing resumes, event registration and tools for exploring career options. A team of digital specialists supports our online presence to ensure that students, graduates and employers can easily access these resources on demand.
Students in select generalist degree programs are taught career management skills as part of their core curriculum, ensuring they start planning their careers from their first year of study. The program is developed and delivered by a dedicated team of academics and learning designers in collaboration with course teams and career development professionals.
The FreelancingHUB provides internships that involve working in a diverse, cross-disciplinary team to deliver solutions for non-profit or community organisations. Each project team is supervised by a project manager with industry experience and supported by a team of work-integrated learning professionals.
Our team of career development professionals offers a range of tailored programs for our students, including international students, career advancers and academic excellence scholarship holders. Workshops to enhance essential career management skills, such as creating a resume, networking and career exploration, are available every Monday to Friday and are complemented by self-directed learning paths.
